Numbers 26:41

These are the sons of Benjamin after their families: and they that were numbered of them were forty and five thousand and six hundred.

Numbers 26:41 belongs to Israel's second numbering in Numbers 26, taken at the end of the forty years of wilderness wandering in the plains of Moab shortly before entering Canaan, forty years after the first numbering in Numbers 1. It was taken after every man counted in the first numbering had died in the wilderness except Caleb and Joshua, because the people were wicked and broke out in open, wanton rebellion against God, so by a solemn oath He excluded them from the promised land and doomed them to die. The verse records the sons of Benjamin after their families in that new generation as 45,600 men numbered.

Compared with 35,400 for Benjamin in the first census, the tribe had increased by 10,200, illustrating how comparing the two numberings shows how some tribes fell off and others increased during the wilderness journey. This census was taken by Moses at the Lord's command, unlike David's later census, which was sinful because he carried it out without the Lord's consent. The second numbering impresses the fact that God will fulfill His threatened judgments, and it warns those upon whom the ends of the world are come, whose hopes of entering the kingdom of God and whose tokens of His favor, presence, and willingness to save are no greater than Israel's were at the first numbering, that cherished sin will bring ruin and cause them to come short as Israel came short.
