Numbers 26:43
All the families of the Shuhamites, according to those that were numbered of them, were threescore and four thousand and four hundred. All the families of the Shuhamites, according to those that were numbered of them, were threescore and four thousand and four hundred.
This verse gives the count of the Shuhamite families in Israel's second census, numbering the men of Dan at 64,400 adult males. That numbering was made at the end of the forty years of wandering, nearly forty years after the departure from Egypt and near the close of that period, just before the entrance into Canaan. The book of Numbers contains two numberings answering to each other, the first at Sinai at its opening and the second in the plains of Moab thirty-eight years later, and this verse belongs to that second numbering.
The census was taken by Moses at the Lord's command, and as such it brought no trouble, unlike David's census taken without the Lord's consent. The second census is to be compared with the first census in Numbers 1 to note the differences among the tribes and to see how they gained or increased and how they lost, fell off, or decreased during the wilderness journey. For Dan the count rose by 1,700, from 62,700 at the first numbering to 64,400, while the total of adult males for the whole nation changed little, from 603,550 to 601,730.
Apart from Caleb and Joshua, not one man numbered the first time was alive to witness the second numbering, for the rebellious generation had fallen and died in the wilderness. This outcome fulfills God's threatened judgments, showing that He carries out what He threatens and warning that sin leads to ruin. The exclusion happened because the people were wicked, with sin in their midst breaking out in open, wanton rebellion against God, so that by solemn oath He barred them from the land and doomed them to die in the wilderness.
