Numbers 26:59

And the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, whom her mother bare to Levi in Egypt: and she bare unto Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister.

The record gives the wife of Amram as Jochebed, the daughter of Levi born to him in Egypt, and names her children by Amram as Aaron and Moses and Miriam their sister, so that the sister who stood to watch over the infant Moses at the river is known as Miriam, the daughter of Amram and Jochebed and the sister of Moses. The verse stands in the second numbering of the host of Israel, taken after the wilderness journeying at the end of the forty years of wandering. It belongs to the second census to be set against the first numbering forty years earlier in Numbers 1.

The numbering shows that the first generation numbered at the first census had died in the wilderness under God's judgment on their rebellion, with none of the men then numbered remaining alive except Caleb and Joshua. The second numbering is to be compared with the first to mark the differences among the tribes and to see which gained or lost in number. Some of the tribes increased and grew greatly, while others decreased and fell off.

The numbering shows that God fulfills His threatened judgments, and that wickedness and cherished sin breaking out in rebellion against God excludes from the promised inheritance. That certainty warns those upon whom the ends of the world are come not to carry sin in the heart, lest with even stronger hopes and tokens of favor they also come short of the kingdom of God.
