Numbers 26:60

And unto Aaron was born Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

Numbers 26:60 belongs to the enumeration recorded in Numbers 26, which is Israel's second census or second numbering of the host. That census was taken at the end of the forty years of wandering, just before the people entered Canaan, nearly forty years after the first census in Numbers 1 taken soon after leaving Egypt. The second numbering in Numbers 1 taken forty years earlier provides the point of comparison for noting the differences among the tribes.

The verse's census is to be compared with the first numbering in Numbers 1 to show how the tribes changed during the wilderness journey. Some tribes fell off or declined, while others increased or grew greatly, with some gaining and others losing and some growing greatly while others declined.

The second numbering shows that not one man save Caleb and Joshua of all who were numbered the first time was alive to witness it, and every other person had fallen in the wilderness. That wholesale loss happened because the people were wicked, sin was in their midst and at last broke out in open, wanton rebellion against the God of Heaven, so that by a solemn oath He excluded them from the land and doomed them to die in the wilderness. The second numbering was calculated to impress the people with the fact that God will fulfill His threatened judgments.
