Moses and Eleazar Number Israel on the Plains of Moabby emmanuel_higgins

Numbers 26:64

But among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbered, when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

The verse sets two numberings of Israel against each other, the first taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai and the second taken by divine direction on the plains of Jordan nearly forty years later. The later numbering was not merely a census but a proof that the sentence uttered nearly forty years before, that they should surely die in the wilderness, had been fully carried out. The judgments that fell for the sin at Shittim cut off the last survivors of the vast company that had been numbered at Sinai.

Of all that first numbered host not one man remained, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
