Numbers 27:20
And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient. And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.
Moses was commanded to place some of his own honor upon Joshua in appointing him to lead Israel after him, so that the whole congregation would recognize his authority and obey him as their appointed leader. The honor given to Joshua was a shared portion of Moses' honor, conferred to secure Israel's acceptance of his leadership after Moses' death.
The transfer was made plain in a public commissioning before the people, with Moses laying his hand upon Joshua and giving him a solemn charge, which made the change of leadership clear and inspired confidence in his authority. Joshua's appointment to lead Israel into the promised land followed his faithful service alongside Moses, and his courage, steadfastness, and faith in God showed his fitness to lead. He was to be faithful in his responsibilities, with the Lord as his counselor and support.
The command illustrates how experienced workers should relate to younger ones raised up to advance God's work, by supporting and strengthening them rather than standing aloof from them or hindering them. The passage is the pattern of Moses being succeeded by Joshua, but it does not establish the claimed appointment of Nelson and White, since a divine appointment of that kind would have been made known directly.
