The Daughters of Zelophehad Receive Their Inheritanceby emmanuel_higgins

Numbers 27:5

And Moses brought their cause before the LORD.

The cause Moses brought before the Lord was the claim presented by the daughters of Zelophehad. He did not presume to decide that case himself but brought it before the Lord for judgment. He waited for God to declare the law that would settle it.

To bring the cause before the Lord in this manner was to submit to God's will. Moses was not an independent lawgiver acting on his own authority. He only received words from the mouth of God and spoke them to the people, conveying to them what God had said rather than legislating himself. God alone legislates.

The laws given in the chapter in answer to that appeal guard women's rights.
