Numbers 28:9
And on the sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and the drink offering thereof: And on the sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and the drink offering thereof:
Numbers 28:9 is part of the instructions for special offerings on Sabbaths, showing that the sanctuary service included offerings in addition to the daily sacrifices. It required additional sacrificial offerings on the Sabbath, more sacrifices than on other days, making that day a time of sacred service and worship with special offerings. The priests in the temple therefore did greater labor on the Sabbath than on other days, since their work with the offerings increased.
Yet in this holy service to God they were blameless, for it did not break the fourth commandment, so performing additional work or service on the Sabbath is not necessarily a violation. This work was not servile labor or work for livelihood, gain, or selfish interest; it was done in God's service and was sacred, while the same labor done as secular business would be sinful. Their rites pointed to the redeeming power of Christ, so their labor was in harmony with the object of the Sabbath, which is the redemption of man.
What is necessary to be done on the Sabbath to accomplish God's redemptive work is therefore in accord with the Sabbath law. With Christ Himself now present as one greater than the temple, the disciples in doing the work of Christ were engaged in God's service, and supplying their need while carrying out that work was right to do on the Sabbath day. Sabbath worship included special sacrificial offerings, so the Sabbath was associated with sacrificial service, a connection that applies to the act of returning property to God.
