The sons of Gershon were assigned charge of the tabernacle tent, its covering, its curtains and hangings, and the hanging for the entrance to the tabernacle of the congregation. This charge was part of the Levites' appointed care of the tabernacle. The Gershonites camped behind the tabernacle. They had care of these parts when the sacred tent was taken down and set up during Israel's journey. Each Levitical group was to perform its own assigned duties without taking over the work of another.
