Numbers 32:41

And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havoth-jair.

The verse stands within the account of the two and a half tribes proposing to remain and settle east of the Jordan. At that point Israel was poised to move toward the promised land while some tribes sought to stay east of the Jordan. Their proposal provides the setting for Moses' warning that those tribes must fulfill their solemn vows and not depart from God.

He warned that turning from God and failing to keep those vows would bring lasting sorrow and ruin on themselves. That situation warns the church that reluctance to advance and discouraging others can delay the whole people's progress.
