Numbers 34:10

And ye shall point out your east border from Hazar-enan to Shepham:

The east line from Hazar-enan to Shepham belongs to the boundaries fixed in advance for Canaan to be divided among the tribes upon Israel's coming into possession. That apportionment embraced the entire land together, both the territory already conquered and that which remained yet unsubdued. Its distribution was placed under Joshua together with Eleazar the high priest and the heads of the tribes, the place of each tribe to be decided by lot, with one prince from each tribe appointed to attend to the work. Levi was left out of that tribal allotment because it was set apart for sanctuary service, receiving instead forty-eight cities scattered in different parts of the country as its inheritance. Each tribe was charged to fully subdue its own inheritance, with the assurance that faithfulness to God and His covenant would lead Him to drive out its enemies and to grant still greater possessions.
