Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon.
Moses gave beforehand the boundaries of Canaan as it was to be divided among the tribes, and named a prince from each tribe to oversee the apportionment, with this naming of Elidad son of Chislon for Benjamin belonging to those advance directions. The work of actually assigning the land was placed in the hands of Joshua together with Eleazar the high priest and the tribal heads, and the place of each tribe was fixed by lot. That allotment embraced the entire country, taking in both the districts already brought under control and those areas that still remained to be conquered. It was then left to each tribe to completely subdue its own portion, under the assurance that faithfulness to God would bring the expulsion of its enemies from before it and even larger possessions as long as the covenant was kept. Levi had no share in this tribal division because that tribe was set apart for sanctuary service, receiving instead forty-eight cities scattered through different regions as its inheritance.
