The prince of the children of Joseph, for the tribe of the children of Manasseh, Hanniel the son of Ephod.
Hanniel the son of Ephod is named as the prince of the children of Manasseh for the tribe of the children of Joseph. He was one of the princes appointed from each tribe to attend to the distribution of Canaan and to carry it out. The work of dividing the land was entrusted to these tribal princes to be performed after Israel had taken possession.
The distribution itself was committed to Joshua together with Eleazar the high priest and the heads of the tribes. The location of each tribe was to be determined by lot. The allotment embraced both the parts already conquered and that which was yet unsubdued. It was the duty of each tribe to fully subdue its own inheritance, with the promise that if the people proved faithful to God He would drive out their enemies from before them. If true to His covenant, He would give them still greater possessions. The tribe of Levi was not counted in this allotment, but forty-eight cities in different parts of the country were assigned to the Levites.
