A Fleeing Man Reaches a City of Refugeby emmanuel_higgins

Numbers 35:13

And of these cities which ye shall give six cities shall ye have for refuge.

The six appointed places of shelter were intended as the model after which every school is to operate. A school fulfills that model by becoming a place of safety for young people under temptation, who stand in particular peril because enticement meets them on every side. In such discipline, fairness is never to stand alone but is to be joined with kindness and sympathetic care. The thoughtless mistakes and wayward acts of youth are therefore to be handled with forbearance and sound judgment.

Every word spoken to students is to be ruled by affection, gentleness, forbearance, and mastery of self. Correction is to be offered in humility and without overstatement, quietly placing the fault before the one at fault in a way that enables him to regain his footing. Those entrusted with correction should choose, if they must lean at all, to lean toward leniency rather than toward harshness. To deal rightly with the stubborn and unruly, instructors must put away from their own inner life and outward conduct anything that would hinder such restorative work.
