Numbers 4:10

And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put it upon a bar.

The direction is that the object together with all its vessels is to be enclosed within a covering of badgers' skins and then placed upon a bar for carrying. This was part of the detailed order for bearing the sacred furnishings of the tabernacle, so that the holy things were not handled or transported indiscriminately. They were to be carefully covered and prepared for removal in a prescribed way, with their treatment preserving reverence for their sacredness.

This covering and carrying belonged to the arrangements for transporting the tabernacle and its holy articles when Israel journeyed in the wilderness. That service included taking the tabernacle down and bearing it, erecting it again, and encamping around it while Israel pitched at a distance. God assigned this work to the Levites, with specific families and divisions each given its own appointed task. The Kohathites had care of the ark with the other furniture including the candlestick, while each Levite division had its own appointed work in handling and carrying the furnishings.

The work was to be done in an appointed order by people chosen for the sacredness of the task. This shows the requirement of order and organization in worship and in the service of the tabernacle. This honored service was given to the Levites because they took no part in making and worshiping the golden calf and faithfully carried out God's judgment upon the idolaters. Yet being thus honored made them ambitious for still higher office and greater influence with the congregation.
