Numbers 4:17

And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

The verse introduces the Lord's instructions to Moses and Aaron about the Levites' sacred duties and service. This service was given to the Levites as an honor because they had remained faithful during the worship of the golden calf. Their assigned work was to erect, guard, care for, take down, carry, and set up the tabernacle and its sacred furnishings when Israel traveled.

God arranged this work in an orderly and specific way, giving different groups and designated families specific responsibilities and making clear who was to do each task and where they were to be, with each worker to keep to the work assigned to him. The arrangement protected the sacred work from unauthorized handling. The instructions were so clear that ignorance was no excuse for disobedience. The careful order God established for the tabernacle teaches His people to respect His arrangements and obey them.
