Numbers 4:25
And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, his covering, and the covering of the badgers’ skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, his covering, and the covering of the badgers’ skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation,
The verse assigns the carrying of the curtains of the tabernacle and the tent of meeting, its covering and the outer skin covering above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tent when Israel traveled. This care of the curtains, coverings, and entrance hanging was a specific duty entrusted as a share of the Levites' care of the tabernacle. The weight of the teaching holds that this carrying work was the specific duty entrusted to the Gershonites as their portion of that Levitical care.
The duty belonged to the Levites' service at the tabernacle during the journeys and at each stopping place. That service was carried out while the rest of the people camped at a distance. The particular assignment of tabernacle and furnishings to particular Levites shows that God required sacred things to be carried in an orderly way by appointed persons. The transport of the sacred tabernacle was part of carefully ordered arrangements, not left for any tribe or person to undertake at will or for whichever tribe chose to do the work.
Those who held the differing teaching held that the verse assigns the carrying of the curtains, coverings, and entrance curtain to the Kohathites.
