The numbering in this verse is part of the census of the Levite clans taken by their families and by the houses of their fathers for service connected with the tabernacle. Those counted were set apart to erect the tabernacle, to take it down, and to carry it with its sacred furnishings from place to place. This appointment came in connection with the faithfulness the Levites had shown after the worship of the golden calf. The work entrusted to them was a distinct honor bestowed by God, yet it gave them no right to claim the priesthood for themselves or to aspire to higher authority.
