Numbers 4:37

These were they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

Moses and Aaron together carried out the counting of the families of the Kohathites, numbering all the men who were able to do service in the tabernacle of the congregation. They acted according to the commandment of the Lord given by the hand of Moses, so the numbering was done in obedience to divine direction rather than by human arrangement. Those counted were set apart for the work of caring for and carrying the tabernacle and its sacred furnishings during the journeys of Israel. This assigned service was an honor entrusted to them, and it gave no ground for claiming higher authority or office beyond what had been appointed.
