Numbers 4:41

These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD.

These were the Gershonite families counted as able to perform service in the tabernacle of the congregation, a numbering carried out by Moses and Aaron in obedience to the command of the Lord. The counting belonged to the ordering by which the Levites were appointed to erect, guard, take down, and transport the tabernacle with its sacred furnishings. That charge was bestowed as an honor because the Levites had stood faithful when Israel worshiped the golden calf and had executed God's sentence upon the idolaters.
