Numbers 5:13
And a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she be defiled, and there be no witness against her, neither she be taken with the manner; And a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she be defiled, and there be no witness against her, neither she be taken with the manner;
The verse describes a case of suspected unfaithfulness in marriage where the act was concealed from the husband's sight, kept secret, left without any witness to testify, and without the woman being caught in the deed. The offering of jealousy and the drinking of the bitter water joined to such a case were not a common sin offering to make atonement, but a divinely appointed test to expose what was hidden and bring the truth to light. If the woman was innocent the ordeal did her no injury, but if she was guilty the result was terrible and swift in falling upon her. In this the rite teaches that sin is more than the outward deed, for open wrongdoing springs from an inner state of heart and character. The whole chapter, understood aright, displays God's hatred of sin and stands as a warning to turn away from sin and from its ruinous path and dreadful outcome.
