Numbers 5:28

And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed.

In the trial for suspected adultery, the verdict upon the woman found innocent is that she is not defiled but clean and free. The bitter water does her no harm and leaves her free from its consequences, for the ordeal exposes guilt while innocence brings no evil result. The vindicated woman is then able to conceive children and remain free to bear seed. The lesson of the chapter is that God abhors sin and that its consequences should lead men to shun its destructive course.
