Numbers 5:3

Both male and female shall ye put out, without the camp shall ye put them; that they defile not their camps, in the midst whereof I dwell.

Both male and female who were defiled were to be put outside the camp, without the camp they were to be put, so that they would not defile the camps in the midst of which God dwells. Those removed for personal uncleanness were to remain outside until they had cleansed themselves and their clothing, and impurities of every kind were to be kept away from the encampment. The command teaches that cleanliness and purity matter to God, who requires a clean and holy people with purity of heart, in person and in houses and in the house of God, in whom He can delight and among whom He can dwell.

Neglect of this requirement can bring disease, and allowing defiling things to remain will make Israel sickly. If the camp is not cleansed of dirt, filth, uncleanness and untidiness, the Lord will pass by, see the uncleanness, turn away in displeasure, and will not go forth with His people to battle, leaving them weak in shame and disgrace for their enemies to triumph over them. An untidy and unclean person is not acknowledged as a Christian and is under God's frown, because soul, body and spirit must be clean and pure to be presented blameless to God.

Applied to tobacco use, a tobacco user would have had to remain outside the camp or stop using tobacco, and cleanse the mouth before returning. Desecration by carelessness and lack of cleanliness must meet with open rebuke, and those professing the truth who do not immediately change in these things must be put out of the camp. Defilement to be put out also includes false views such as the age-to-come and spiritualistic ideas like spiritual union and spiritual wifery, which take away the power of the third angel's message.

Putting out of the camp means withdrawing all fellowship from those who hold such views until they give them up and get right, which leaves the believers in a better state. The verse means that members who do not partake of the spirit of Jesus, who lack vital godliness, and whose hearts are not sanctified by the truth they profess will be put out as those who are not right. For the church this requires disfellowshipping the stubborn and rebellious who wound and tear the hearts of God's people and remain a dead weight to the church, unless they change their course entirely.
