Numbers 5:30
Or when the spirit of jealousy cometh upon him, and he be jealous over his wife, and shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law. Or when the spirit of jealousy cometh upon him, and he be jealous over his wife, and shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law.
The verse belongs to the law of jealousy, under which a husband who suspected his wife of unfaithfulness without direct evidence was to bring her before the priest with a barley meal offering. That offering was not made to atone for sin but to bring iniquity to remembrance and to discover whether she was guilty, so that hidden sin would be exposed. In the test the bitter water would do no harm to the woman if she was innocent, but if she was guilty it would bring upon her a dreadful and speedy death. The chapter as a whole displays God's abhorrence of sin and stands as a warning to shun its destructive course and its fearful end.
