Numbers 5:4

And the children of Israel did so, and put them out without the camp: as the LORD spake unto Moses, so did the children of Israel.

The book is named for its two numberings of Israel, one near the beginning and one near the close, its first four chapters deal with the numbering of the people, the numbering of the tribe of Levi, and the office of the families of Levi, and chapters 5 and 6 contain among other instructions the laws concerning jealousy and the Nazirites and close with the blessing the priests were to place upon the children of Israel. The verse belongs to the various vows and ceremonies given when the tribes were numbered and ordered in camp with the sanctuary in the center. The verse records that Israel carried out the Lord's instruction to put the specified people outside the camp, and the chapter's regulations show God's abhorrence of sin and are meant to lead people away from sin and its destructive end.
