Numbers 6:1

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

The verse introduces the Lord's instructions given through Moses concerning the Nazarite vow, provided for when a man or woman vows to be set apart for the Lord. The vow required abstinence all the days of separation from wine and strong drink and from anything produced by the vine, including grape juice and fresh or dried grapes, from seed to skin.

The vow included a period of purification, whose sacrifices could still remain to be offered when its term had nearly expired. Completing the vow required seven days of purification and costly sacrificial offerings for each person who had taken it.

The verse teaches temperance from a Christian standpoint. John the Baptist was consecrated to God as a Nazarite under this law.
