Jesus With Three Children Under a BlessingBible World
6:24Numbers 6:24
The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
It opens the blessing God commanded Moses to give Aaron and his sons to pronounce over Israel, placing His name upon the people with the promise to bless them. To be kept is to live under God's care and protection, safe beneath the shadow of His wings and secure as in the hollow of His hand, with the hand placed in Christ's hand to be held and led and guarded by His power. The blessing and keeping belong to those who keep holy the day God set apart, taking the Creator's name and bearing holiness as their badge as loyal subjects of His kingdom. It is spoken as a benediction and prayer over others, asking that His blessing rest richly upon them and keep them spotless and faithful unto the end. It gives words for blessing family and household, for farewell, and for encouraging aged believers, asking Him to strengthen and guard and teach them when the future is unknown.
Origin and Meaning
The Lord directed Moses to give Aaron and his sons the words to speak over Israel, opening with the petition that He would bless and keep them, thereby setting His name upon the people with the assurance that He would bless them. The blessing and its keeping were joined to that placing of His name as the portion belonging to Israel.
The chapter stands in the setting of the Nazarite vow, laying out how the vow was to be completed through purification and sacrifices. Its term had nearly expired for the four men who were with Paul, who still had to complete the days of purification and offer the sacrifices required for each of them. Paul entered with them into the seven days and shared in meeting the cost of what had to be offered.
The blessing and keeping are the portion of those who keep holy the day He set apart, for those who obey the fourth commandment take the Creator's name and share the blessings bound up with it. Those who keep the seventh day carry a public sign that they honor Him by keeping His commandments, bearing His sign as loyal subjects of His kingdom who acknowledge Him as Maker of heaven and earth, with holiness to the Lord as their badge. In this a plain line is drawn between the one who serves God and the one who does not serve Him, and those who keep the Sabbath rest in cheerful and happy assurance of receiving His blessing.
To be kept is to be kept safely ever beneath the shadow of His wings in His care and protection. It is to be held safe and secure as in the hollow of His hand. It is to place the hand in the hand of Christ and be held and led and guarded by His power, with Him first and last and best in everything and a present help in every time of need. The blessing to bless and preserve embraces physical and spiritual health, preservation in health with His Spirit and grace resting upon the person, and continued health and well-being even for a one-year-old child. It gives good courage and guards against yielding to temptation so as to come off victorious, and lets light shine upon the person. To all who put their trust in Him, whom He never disappoints, it gives special grace, strength, peace, and unfailing help that make the last days of service the best days, fragrant with the softening, subduing influence of His love and with repose in His love.
Prayer for Others
The verse is a benediction and prayer to speak over others, asking that the blessing of the Lord rest richly upon them. It asks the Lord to bless them and keep them spotless till His appearing. It is a prayer to offer for another that the Lord will bless and guard and teach him. This is especially fitting when what the future will bring is not known.
It is a prayer of blessing for a family, that the Lord will help, guide, strengthen and bless them with the precious sunlight of His countenance. It asks the Lord to bless dear children and every member of the household, to bless and keep them all as in the hollow of His hand, where keeping means being held safe and secure in protective care. It asks the Lord to strengthen and keep people in all their happy associations together as family and as church in the home. It is also a prayer for loved ones such as children and grandchildren as well as for oneself, offered while apart from them and uncertain where the future will lead.
The verse gives words for saying good-bye, asking the Lord to bless and to keep by His power. As a farewell blessing for a dear family member, it asks the Lord to bless and keep and sanctify the person to Himself, spoken with encouragement to be of good courage and with hope of meeting again when the warfare of this life is accomplished. The same farewell gives courage to an aged loved one when only few of the family are left alive and rest in the grave is near.
It is a fitting blessing for aged believers and those who have long kept the faith, for whom the Lord is the stay after years of serving God and still helping His work with their means, as with Brother Robert Sawyer and his sister Hannah. Spoken over a fellow believer, it asks the Lord to bless and keep him in hope and courage to do his best in faith and hope and to do his appointed work, and if he does not live to see the Lord's appearing to lay off his armor with sanctified dignity. It is spoken to give courage to a brother carrying too great a strain, asking the Lord to bless and keep him and to give him victories in Jesus Christ, joined with practical care and welcome to come for change and rest when needed.
The verse is a benediction against discouragement that asks the Lord to bless believers and keep them faithful unto the end. Keeping faithful means daily becoming consecrated channels through whom heavenly life flows to others, with the Holy Spirit animating and pervading the whole church to purify and unite hearts. It means never losing sight of Jesus as the Author and Finisher of faith, following Christ who was tried, condemned, and crucified as the Lord's only begotten Son.
