Numbers 7:8
And four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according unto their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. And four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according unto their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
Four wagons and eight oxen were given to the sons of Merari according to their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. The Levitical families were given different provision for different duties, with wagons to help carry burdens while the sons of Kohath received none. The sons of Kohath were appointed to carry the sacred vessels and furnishings of the sanctuary on their shoulders, so the ark was to be borne by its staves and was not to be carried on a wagon.
The small transport of only four wagons and eight oxen for moving the tabernacle proves the boards forming the sides and west end could not have been one cubit thick. Such an immense mass of timber with all its bars, pillars and sockets, together with the pillars of the court round about and their sockets, pins and cords, could not have been moved from place to place with only that help. The boards must therefore have been thin, four fingers thick, with the two corner boards made narrower to fit the exigency of their position.
