Numbers 9:12

They shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break any bone of it: according to all the ordinances of the passover they shall keep it.

The ordinance forbids breaking any bone of the Passover lamb. It also requires leaving none of it until the morning and keeping the sacrifice whole, because the offering must be perfect and whole. This ordinance was fulfilled in Jesus on the cross as the Lamb of God, offered as the perfect and true Passover sacrifice with His bones unbroken. Permission was given to hasten death so the bodies could be removed before the Sabbath, so the soldiers broke the legs of the two men crucified with Him, but they did not break the limbs of Jesus because He was already dead, being held back from doing so.

His death was instead made sure by a soldier piercing His side with a spear, from which came two distinct streams of blood and water noted by all beholders. The definite eyewitness record of the pierced side and the blood and water is true and was written so readers might believe, refuting the false reports that Jesus merely fainted on the cross and was afterward resuscitated or that only the likeness of a body of flesh and bone was laid in the tomb.
