That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.
Abiding and continuing with the believers and coming to them again makes their rejoicing in Jesus Christ on his behalf more abundant. Paul's return to the believers would give them greater cause to rejoice in Jesus Christ.
That abiding is for the furtherance and joy of faith through aggressive, bold, and forceful personal labor. The labor speaks truth with assurance under the Holy Spirit, goes directly to people, studies how to reach them, and puts energy and deep interest into the subject. It carries hearers forward and urges the last message of mercy that means eternal life upon the conscience with divine power. It also prays earnestly for approval as a worker in God's vineyard.
The fruit of such labor is conduct worthy of the gospel whether the minister is present or absent, standing fast in one spirit and striving together with one mind for the faith of the gospel. Those so established are terrified in nothing by adversaries, and such fearlessness is to opponents an evident token of destruction but to believers salvation from God. For ministry, the verse therefore supports faithful service that strengthens believers' joy in Christ.
