Philippians 1:27

Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

Believers are to live in a way that fits the good news of Christ as citizens of heaven, holding firm together with united spirit and purpose in working for the faith of that good news. This steadfast unity is required whether leaders are present to see it or absent, whether believers are watched or unwatched, together or apart. In that stand they are to show no fear before opponents but remain strong, alert and courageous, and their courage itself marks coming ruin for their enemies and rescue from God for themselves. It is granted to them on Christ's behalf not only to trust in him but to suffer for him, as members of his fighting church against seen and unseen foes until his intercession ends. That oneness means sharing the same love in humility, valuing others above self with a pure mind under God's control, and living free from selfishness, strife and impurity so that a self-sacrificing life clearly sets Christians apart from the world.

Worthy Conduct in Unity

Believers are required to let their conduct and conversation be worthy of, fitting to, and becoming to the gospel of Christ. That worthiness is not outward polish but a change wrought by conversion in those who are citizens of heaven. It is a life that fits the gospel because it belongs to Christ and displays His gospel in character and action.

That worthy conduct is defined as standing fast together in one spirit and with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel. To stand fast is to stand firm and united without wavering, and to strive together is to labor side by side with fellow believers for the same faith. Unity of spirit and oneness of mind are therefore the appointed evidence that the life is becoming to the gospel.

This united steadfastness must hold whether Paul comes to see them or remains absent. Whether believers are seen or unseen, watched or not, together or apart, their affairs are to show the same firm standing in one spirit. Steadfastness that depends on the presence of fellow workers or leaders is not the steadfastness required, for the unity and courage are to remain evident at all times and in every place.

Fearless Witness Under Opposition

Those who stand fast together for the faith of the gospel are in nothing to be terrified or frightened by adversaries, but are to remain united, steadfast, strong, alert and courageous in conflict. This fearlessness is not timidity giving way under pressure but firm standing together in one spirit and striving with one mind, holding the ground in the struggle of the church.

Such steadfast courage is to adversaries an evident token and sign of destruction and perdition, while to believers it is a token of salvation, and that salvation is from God. The united witness testifies both to the outcome awaiting opponents and to the deliverance God gives his own.

It is given on Christ's behalf not only to believe on Him but also to suffer for His sake, and both believing and suffering belong to the witness of His followers. This united standing, whether fellow workers are present or absent, is joined to courage before adversaries and willingness to suffer for Christ.

The call belongs to the militant church fighting seen and unseen foes and confederacies opposed to God's law until Christ leaves His place of intercession. In that fierce conflict with unseen enemies believers must not be weaklings nor off guard for a moment, but strong, watchful and unyielding.

Unity Applied to Life

To stand in one spirit is to be likeminded, having the same love and being of one accord. It is to do nothing through strife or vainglory, but in lowliness of mind to esteem others better than self and to look also on the things of others, with the mind of Christ. That oneness requires a clear, pure, clean, healthy mind, kept free from everything depressing and held at all times under God's control through the Holy Spirit.

Conduct becoming the gospel is conformed to the Lord's requirements and separated from the world, giving God cheerful service. It does not disgrace heavenly citizenship before angels or men while claiming its rights and privileges. It is free from strife, vainglory, selfishness, murmuring, disputing, impurity, and dishonesty. It is spoken to those still wrestling with temptation and in danger of being drawn away from Christ and overcome by wiles, not to those beyond temptation.

For gospel workers the call to stand fast and strive together is a charge to work with courage, boldness, determination, and energy rather than timidity. It requires more faith, decision, push, force, and deep interest, with less narrowness, moving forward refusing to fail or be discouraged. It means studying the situation and methods to reach people, going directly to them, carrying hearers along, and doing actual service. It means circulating and practicing known truth, bearing neglected responsibilities, and making a charge against the enemy in aggressive warfare. It means speaking truth with boldness and assurance under the Holy Spirit, realizing the message is eternal life if accepted and death if rejected, widening and broadening the labor, and making the labor a subject of earnest prayer for God's approval and success.

In shared work that unity is a witness to the power of God's Word, as workers show Christ's character through obedience, love, and harmony. Each is to be rightly related to God and learning from Christ, who stands at their head, and to represent His character in work and relationships. Workers are to stand together, encourage one another in faith, and not discourage those God is using, since burdening and blocking the work of enlightening the world serves Satan. A well-ordered, godly life and conversation worthy of the gospel exerts a strong influence for God and His truth. It clearly distinguishes Christians from the world by reflecting Christ's self-sacrifice, rejecting selfishness, luxury amid others' suffering, oppression, injustice, pride, and love of applause, and willingly living humbly and making sacrifices, thereby exposing and condemning the world's folly, idolatry, and sinful practices.
