Philippians 1:28
And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.
To be in nothing terrified by adversaries is the command of the verse, and such fearless courage is an evident token of perdition to the adversaries and of salvation to the believers, and that salvation is of God. This fearlessness belongs with conduct becoming the gospel, standing fast in one spirit and with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel. Both believing on Christ and suffering for His sake are given to believers in His behalf as part of their calling. In that calling the church stands in ongoing conflict with seen and unseen foes and cannot afford to be weaklings or off guard for a moment. It is to labor with faith and boldness and decision rather than timidity and tame efforts, carrying on aggressive warfare and urging the truth upon the conscience with the power of God.
Fearless Unity for Gospel
The verse commands believers to be in nothing terrified by adversaries. Their fearless courage in the face of opposition is an evident token of perdition to the adversaries. That same steadfastness is to the believers themselves a token of salvation. That salvation is of God, coming from Him and granted by Him.
This fearlessness belongs with conduct becoming the gospel of Christ. That conduct means standing fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel. Believers are to stand together and united for the gospel without being frightened by opponents.
Believing on Christ and suffering for His sake are both given to believers in His behalf as part of their calling. It is granted to them not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for His sake.
Steadfast Conflict and Witness
The church militant is in an ongoing conflict with seen and unseen foes, and is commanded to fight without fear. Satanic agencies in human form are on the ground in every city, and men have confederated to oppose the Lord of hosts. Professed saints and avowed unbelievers have joined parties opposed to the law of God, and these confederacies will continue until Christ leaves His place of intercession before the mercy-seat and puts on the garments of vengeance. In that conflict the people of God must not be weaklings and cannot afford to be off guard for one moment, but must stand fast in one spirit with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel with conduct becoming the gospel. Being in nothing terrified by adversaries is to the adversaries an evident token of perdition but to believers a token of salvation, and that salvation is of God, and suffering for His sake is given in His behalf just as believing on Him is given.
Fearlessness before opposition means laboring with faith, boldness, decision, push and determination instead of timidity, discouragement and tame efforts. It means carrying on aggressive warfare and making a charge against the enemy, studying how to reach people. It means speaking the truth with boldness and assurance under the Holy Spirit as a message of eternal life, working diligently lest labor be in vain, and urging truth upon the conscience with the power of God.
The same fearlessness calls for proclaiming the message boldly and confidently despite rejection, where accepting the message means eternal life while rejecting it brings death. It requires courageous unity in holding the faith and maintaining right order against wrong, with conduct becoming the gospel, standing fast in one spirit with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel. Such united steadfastness without terror before adversaries points to the adversaries' ruin and to the believers' salvation, which comes from God, and belongs with being given in Christ's behalf not only to believe on Him but also to suffer for His sake. Believers who so stand together for the gospel without being frightened by opposers share the kind of conflict Paul faced, with faith in Christ and suffering for Him both given to them.
The verse is also one God holds out to one tempted to doubt His power and to call it mesmerism, to show the sin of doubting and resisting Him. It is held out to strengthen against confusion and adversaries, and to settle the heart in praise and in confidence never again to doubt or resist His power.
