Paul Puts His Arm Around Timothy at the Scrollsby CBPepper
2:22Philippians 2:22
But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.
It is a tribute that keeps very precious the memory of Timothy, the young man chosen of God. It gives the proof of him, that as a son with his father he served with Paul in the gospel. That proven character and faithful service made him a trusted fellow worker and son in the gospel, for he had been carefully examined, he valued the ministry, and he was willing to face suffering.
His circumcision was not required by God but was arranged to remove a Jewish obstacle to the work. At the same time it was taught that circumcision itself was nothing and the gospel was everything. Serving in the gospel as a son with the father requires a thorough change of character before God can acknowledge believers as His children, having the mind that dwelt in Jesus so as to conduct themselves aright and keep order in the church, including correct observing of the Sabbath. This includes confession of wrongs toward brethren and sisters and hearty repentance with shame and confusion of face before God for an unrighteous course.
