Proverbs 10:14

Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

Knowledge is valuable, and those who are wise lay it up and keep it in store, while the mouth of the foolish brings destruction near. The wise store up knowledge rather than squandering it, and the speech of the foolish puts the speaker close to ruin. To lay up knowledge is the mark of wisdom, and to speak foolishly is to bring ruin upon oneself.

Knowledge is to be cultivated and put to right use instead of being spent in careless and unguarded speech. The knowledge to be stored includes knowledge of sin gained through the law and knowledge of salvation gained through Jesus Christ. Intellectual learning, rightly pursued, enriches life and fits a person for fellowship with God and Christ and angels, without lessening religious devotion. Study of nature and of the laws that govern the universe enlarges the sense of God's power and brings humility before Him.
