Proverbs 10:25

As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

The verse sets two opposite ends side by side, with the wicked swept away quickly and completely like a passing whirlwind because they have nothing lasting in them, while the righteous stand on and remain as a foundation that lasts forever. To be no more means to come to an end and cease to exist, losing form and substance until it is as though they had not been. The wicked are therefore not kept alive forever in fire to be tormented without end, but their punishment brings their existence to an end, until the whole universe is cleansed of wickedness. The righteous endure forever because those made like Christ endure with Him, for Christ as the living Word made flesh is the sure foundation, and when God's Word and character are lived out in human lives they become a ground of confidence that brings endless blessing and life. So a life built in sin and vice is wrecked like what is not secure in a whirlwind, while character anchored in God's eternal righteousness and power stands firm through every tempest.

Contrast of Two Destinies

The wicked are like a whirlwind in its passing, swift and complete, sweeping away whatever is not secure to show that they are perishable and temporary rather than durable and everlasting. Their passing leaves nothing behind, for they are finally destroyed and not kept alive eternally in fire. A life of character built in sin and vice is wrecked by such tempests, while character anchored in eternal righteousness and power stands firm.

To say the wicked is no more means utter destruction, that they pass away and come to an end and cease to exist with no future existence. They lose form and substance and become as though they had not been, in contrast to an enduring condition that remains. Their destruction is complete disappearance rather than continuance forever.

The righteous, by contrast, remain as an everlasting foundation, enduring forever while the wicked disappear when the whirlwind passes. Their endurance is set directly against the destruction of the wicked, permanence against passing away like a whirlwind. Such righteousness brings endless blessing and life.

Doctrine and Daily Life

The wicked do not continue forever but come to a complete end, passing away as fully as a passing whirlwind. They are not preserved forever in fire to be tormented nor kept alive eternally in fire, but lose form and substance and become as though they had never been, with no future existence. Their punishment ends their existence, and the whole universe will one day be cleansed of wickedness while the righteous remain forever.

Those made like Christ endure with Him as an everlasting foundation. Christ as the living Word made flesh is a sure foundation and source of confidence, and when God's Word and character are lived out in people's lives they too become a source of confidence to unbelievers. Righteousness, in contrast to the passing wicked who are no more when the whirlwind passes, brings endless blessing and life by enduring as an everlasting foundation.

Like a whirlwind sweeping away what is not secure, the wicked do not endure. The tempests of a life built in sin and vice can wreck character. Character anchored in God's eternal righteousness and power stands firm.
