Proverbs 10:31

The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

The mouth of the just bringing forth wisdom means that the righteous speak wisely out of a kind spirit whose aim and effect is to give happiness to others. Such wise speech is not merely pleasant in tone but belongs to kindness itself as its source and character. It fulfills duty owed to neighbors by imparting joy to those who hear it. It also cultivates agreeableness in daily relations, making intercourse cheerful rather than harsh.

This kind of speech benefits the church and benefits society by strengthening goodwill and peace among people. It makes the one who speaks it honored and welcome wherever he goes. It stands in direct contrast to scandal, gossip, and talebearing, which wound and divide. It likewise stands opposed to contention and revenge, which repay evil and stir strife.
