Proverbs 11:17

The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.

Showing mercy brings good to the soul of the one who shows it, for the merciful themselves will receive mercy in return. The possession of this grace produces kindness and love in the heart, and because mercy is continually received from God it is to be continually exercised toward others. Hardness of heart and coldness toward others belong to Satan and can never represent Christ. If all who profess Christ manifested such Christlike mercy, the world would be transformed, praise would ascend to God, and love for Him would be awakened in the hearts of others.
