Proverbs 11:19

As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

Righteousness inclines toward life as its natural outcome, while the pursuit of evil is a pursuit of one's own death because sin carries its own retribution. Wrongdoing does not end with itself but sets in motion consequences that lead toward death. Repentance reverses that course by producing the fruit of righteousness, and that fruit leads onward to life.

This same movement from sin toward death and from righteousness toward life is displayed again in the history of Jacob's sons. Their story repeats the pattern in lived experience, showing retribution following sin and life following repentance and righteousness.
