Proverbs 11:2

When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

When pride comes, disgrace and shame come with it, but true wisdom is found with those who are lowly and humble in heart. Humility keeps a person teachable and guarded from downfall, while pride sets a course that ends in humiliation. The contrast is fixed: exaltation of self brings shame, and lowness of mind brings wisdom.

For those training for medical service, this wisdom takes the form of a clear sense of how much remains to be learned. It refuses boastful claims and pretentious display, choosing instead to listen to instruction and receive correction from experienced physicians. It moves forward step by step with caution rather than rushing ahead in self-confidence.
