Proverbs 11:30

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life that bears life-giving fruit to bless others through godly influence, conduct and character. Winning souls means bringing people from sin to righteousness, to Christ as personal Saviour, to God and to the truth. He who wins souls is wise, for soul-winning is wisdom and the highest and most precious work. That call rests on every Christian and not on ministers alone, marking true followers who set aside self-interest to save sinners. Wisdom in the work is to take Christ as pattern, to labor with a tender, compassionate and winsome spirit, and to cooperate with God through prayer and the Holy Spirit as channels of light. Work done with God to turn many to righteousness endures forever, and those who do it will shine forever like stars and share great joy in the souls won.

Fruit and Wise Winning

The fruit of the righteous is like a tree of life, bearing life-giving fruit that blesses others through godly influence, conduct, and character. The lives of great men illustrate this fruitful life as a blessing to others. When grace awakens the missionary spirit, the converted person seeks to bring others to know the preciousness of the Saviour's love. Faithful service, prayerful watchfulness, earnest warnings, and tender care for those in danger help remove obstacles and lead people to Christ. Modesty, Christian courtesy, kindness, and gentle, loving words help draw people to Christ. Winning people to Christ is a conquest through which heaven's grace is revealed, carried on by those willing to spend themselves, and marked by joy, gratitude, and the strengthening influence of God's love.

Winning souls means bringing people from sin to righteousness, to Christ as personal Saviour, to God, to the truth, and to love God and keep His commandments. It is a call resting on every Christian, not on ministers alone, to make Christ known and actively seek the conversion of others. To win a weary soul is to speak to that person of Christ's love and why He came to die, in work done together with the Lord. The work is pictured as gaining stars for one's crown. It requires earnest, unselfish labor to bring people to love God and keep His commandments. A physician does it by using the patient's trust in the moment of uncertainty to point to Christ as a personal Saviour and magnify God's power, and by continuing to care for that soul if life is spared. It is done through persevering Christian help, prayer for those being helped, dependence on God, and the Holy Spirit's work in the helper's heart and mind, as God and human agents work together to restore people to God's moral image.

He who wins souls is wise, for soul-winning is wisdom, the science of salvation, a precious work and the highest aim. The converted person receives heavenly light, and work done with God to turn people to righteousness endures forever. Those who work for Christ cultivate His graces and put away harshness, becoming thoughtful, courteous, tenderhearted, and compassionate so they can win souls. The call to win souls is joined to making Christ, rather than human judgment, the standard and pattern. In teaching reform, wisdom means treating learners tenderly, speaking with care and love, and giving people truth in ways they can receive, especially on sensitive subjects that restrict the appetites and passions. Soul-winning calls for Christlike love, tenderness, sympathy, courtesy, humility, and flexibility toward people, including those who seem uninterested or are hardened by prejudice, because they are still within the reach of grace.

All Called to Win

The call to win souls rests on every Christian, not on ministers alone, for the righteous bear fruit by helping others come to Christ and making Him known through active seeking of their conversion. Winning souls is wise, precious work that marks true followers of Christ, who set aside self-interest and consecrate themselves to the Master's service to save sinners. Those who lack a desire to save sinners should pray for a spirit of service, while God blesses with wisdom and guidance all who look to Him for this work. Careful conduct and a life showing Christ's purity and simplicity witness to genuine piety and glorify God.

Physicians no less than ministers are to seek this wise work of winning souls to Christ through public and private effort. Like the minister, the physician is to help people caught in temptation by praying with them and pointing them to Jesus. The patient's trust and moment of uncertainty are to be used to point to Christ as personal Saviour and to magnify God's power, and if life is spared the physician should continue to care for that soul.

Sabbath-school teachers and officers are to lead the young into safe paths and set aside selfish interests so they can wisely win souls for the Master, while church members and leaders share responsibility to care for the weak and straying who are in danger of losing their souls. Young men and women should be trained to bear responsibility and, united with the Saviour, grow spiritually to become valuable workers in His vineyard by leading people to Christ and presenting the third angel's message attractively. Education and training under God's blessing prepare them for this wise soul-winning. Small sanitariums properly conducted also help win souls when their workers reflect Christ, live out pure religion, and extend its influence to many, with modesty and Christian courtesy shown in kind treatment and gentle, loving words that draw people to Christ. Soul-winning follows Christ's methods of teaching the Scriptures personally, explaining them and repeating their truths, so that as workers teach those in spiritual darkness the Holy Spirit also teaches them and gives them the bread of life to share.

Knowing the truth brings responsibility for neighbors and their families, and standing faithfully for it can help bring them to the truth. Personal influence is to be used where one is to lead others to serve God and take responsibility for their salvation, rather than waiting for a better opportunity or letting other work prevent bringing others to the truth. Money, voice, influence, time, means, talents, and opportunities are entrusted by God to be used and invested to do good, help the poor and suffering, and bring souls into His cause. Using these gifts as God intends makes givers co-workers with the Saviour and enables them to win souls by representing His character.

Paul used his remaining freedom to strengthen believers so they could faithfully do this wise work of winning people to Jesus and remain steadfast in the gospel during coming trials.

Wisdom in Soul Winning

Winning souls is wise, and the wisdom belongs to Bible religion, with Christ Himself, not human judgment, human teachers, or humanly made standards, as the standard, pattern, teacher, and example for life. Soul-winners study the great Teacher, keep His example before them, take the Lord of heaven as their teacher, reflect His character, and reveal Him not only by preaching but by a daily life of prayer, love, holy deeds, and Christlike character that helps lead people to Jesus. God entrusts people with means, talents, and opportunities to help the poor and suffering, and using these gifts as He intends makes them co-workers with the Saviour and enables them to win souls by representing His character, with mercy and grace flowing winsomely from the heart to others.

Wisdom for this work is a thoughtful, courteous, tenderhearted, compassionate spirit, putting away harshness and cultivating Christ's graces so as to win souls. It calls for Christlike love, tenderness, sympathy, courtesy, humility, modesty, kindness, forbearance, and gentle, loving words that draw people to Christ, in sanitarium work through kind treatment as well as in all labor for Him. It graciously adapts to others and comes close with flexibility even to those who seem uninterested or are hardened by prejudice, because they are still within the reach of grace.

Souls cannot be driven into the truth but are won more successfully by gentle influence, patient, kind, tender conduct toward family and friends, and a godly example in the neighborhood. Workers must persuade rather than drive, offering personal help in dependence on the Holy Spirit, with sanctified ability, tact, and skill to gather people to Christ. One whose conduct and manner repel others and drive them from the truth is unfit to win souls and is a poor representative of it, so winning people to the truth calls for an encouraging, courteous spirit and a willingness to come close rather than standing apart in stiffness or hopelessness, yielding and making admissions as far as conscience allows without sacrificing any principle of truth. Criticism, excessive formality, rigidity, and repelling manners weaken the work, while courtesy, tender sympathy, love, forbearance, and the Holy Spirit's empowering give greater influence to win souls, with God using people as His instruments.

The work is done through human cooperation with God and endures through the eternal ages, for the converted person receives heavenly light and work done with God to turn people to righteousness endures forever. God desires every believer to seek this work and blesses those who look to Him for wisdom and guidance, whose careful conduct and life showing Christ's purity and simplicity witness to genuine piety and glorify God. Soul-winning is accomplished through persevering Christian help, prayer for those being helped, dependence on God, and the Holy Spirit's work in the helper's heart and mind, as God and human agents work together to restore people to God's moral image. Laborers must faithfully do what they can and trust Jesus to supply what they lack, standing in right relation to God as channels of light with Christ as their only helper, leaving the result to Him who loves souls more than they can, and needing His help to work wisely to bring people to Him.

Winning souls requires more than knowing the truth; a life shaped by sanctification and godly conduct can help win souls while an unsanctified life can lead them away, so sustained self-discipline and a well-ordered life are required. The truth must first be planted deeply in the helper's own heart and govern the life, producing earnest, untiring efforts to plant it in others, and those who labor to save others must first be purified and cleansed from sin, after which God gives knowledge and wisdom to win hearts. Diligent self-discipline, prayer for needed grace, self-denial, sacrifice, and sanctified labor that overcomes selfish desires make example agree with teaching and produce good fruit, with success depending on connection with God. Spiritual knowledge already gained must be put to use in doing good, and prolonged study that makes missionary work less desirable is a failure to advance in this wisdom.

Sanctified social relationships, sanctified by the Spirit of Christ, are a wise means to lead others to Jesus. Words revealing a heart filled with God's love bear fruit by winning souls, and earnest conversation and prayer can win them even without public preaching, with apt words each day, faithful watching, prayerful watchfulness, earnest warnings, and tender care for those in danger helping remove obstacles and lead people to Christ. A carefully trained voice, clear speech, and effective singing, cultivated through earnest effort and joined with divine grace, can become a power to lead people to Christ and benefit others, as can consistent conduct without much talking. Workers need God's Spirit, tact, and skill to lead people to Jesus, doing what they can in His name in right relation to God.

In teaching reform, wisdom means treating learners tenderly, speaking with care and love, and giving truth in ways it can be received, especially on sensitive subjects such as hygiene that restrict the appetites and passions.

Those who undertake to win souls need humble, devoted hearts and must keep learning and doing their duty in God's service. Those who give themselves humbly and devotedly to God, keep learning, and faithfully do their appointed duty every day are prepared for this wise work and need not wait years to begin.

Fruit Borne and Rewarded

Work done in cooperation with God to turn people to righteousness endures forever through the eternal ages. To win souls in this way is wisdom, for the one converted receives heavenly light. Those who turn many to righteousness will shine forever like stars.

Winning people from sin to righteousness is wise work, pictured as gaining stars for a crown. Those who join Christ in carrying the work forward are promised souls as their reward, in a shared labor in which every believer has a part together with the angels as one body joined by the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit. Winning souls for Christ means seeking to save the perishing and bring them to the truth under a sense of accountability for the work, and those saved will recognize the part their soul-winners played and give their crowns to Jesus.

Winning people to Christ is a conquest through which heaven's grace is revealed, undertaken by those willing to spend themselves to save perishing souls, and marked by joy, gratitude, and the strengthening influence of God's love. Bringing a soul to the light of truth is wise work that brings great reward and joy when a person turns to the light. Such a conversion may be the first sign of a wider harvest of souls. In seeking to bless others by visiting homes, speaking with people, and sharing publications, workers are themselves blessed, gain experience in faith, grow in knowledge of Scripture, and have their hands strengthened.

Sharing advantages with those laboring in more difficult places and fields is fruit of the tree of life and an expression of love or charity. Such self-denying help is a wise part in saving souls, and spiritual blessing comes in proportion to this service. God gives intellect and other abilities, means, talents, and opportunities, and people are to cultivate and develop them with goodness of heart and use what God has given to bless others and help the poor and suffering. A carefully trained voice, clear speech, and effective singing, cultivated through earnest effort and joined with divine grace, can become a power to lead people to Christ and benefit others. Intellectual ability without goodness of heart can become a power for evil, while a wise person uses the influence of a noble character to win souls. Exercising abilities through earnest conversation and prayer with seekers of truth, even without public preaching, increases usefulness and enables greater work for Christ, and using God-given gifts as He intends makes people co-workers with the Saviour in winning souls.

A life devoted to God and spent blessing others can have an enduring influence by leading people to Christ. Wise soul-winning grows from a righteous life of diligent self-discipline, prayer for needed grace, self-denial, sacrifice, and sanctified effort, producing good fruit and making example consistent with teaching. Success in this work depends on connection with God. It is to be sought with greater zeal among His meek and lowly people, to find and win souls there.
