Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.
In the day of God's wrath and judgment riches bring no relief and cannot save a person, even in the greatest distress when help is most needed. Wealth has no power to rescue when divine judgment comes, and it cannot deliver the soul from death. It is righteousness, not riches, that delivers from death. That deliverance includes escape from death as the retribution due for wrongdoing, which money cannot avert.
The way into that delivering righteousness is humble confession of sin by which the sinner is brought into favor with God. Hoarded wealth stands under condemnation rather than affording protection, especially wealth increased by withholding the wages of workers. By contrast, generous giving and the just, faithful use of entrusted goods belong to the righteousness that does deliver. Likewise wealth gained through selfishness, deceit, robbery, and other violations of God's law cannot rescue the soul in that day.
