When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.
Genuine faith is founded upon God's Word and genuine hope is founded upon God's promise, with hope itself being desire coupled with expectancy. The hope of the righteous is for good in harmony with righteousness. The hope of the wicked is also for good, sometimes even for good that God has promised, but without yielding to the conditions of righteousness on which the promise rests, so God is not in it and it is an expectation that will not come to pass.
When a wicked, unjust person dies, the expectation and hope he held as such perish with him. Persisting in sin leaves no ground for hope of life and immortality in the world to come. Death ends the wicked person's opportunity to hear and believe the gospel, so the character he has at death determines his eternal destiny.
