Proverbs 12:22

Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

Lying speech is an abomination to the Lord, detestable and hateful to Him, while dealing truly and honestly is His delight. Pretending to give all to God while secretly withholding part, as Ananias and Sapphira did, was a lie to God, that is to the Holy Spirit, and their punishment displays God's abhorrence of deception, which He condemns in every age. The verse requires holding truthfulness firmly and making it part of every area of life, because using falsehood for selfish advantage injures faith and trust.

The verse supplies the just standard of honor and righteousness for business transactions, condemning ambition for gain that loses all distinction between right and wrong, exaggerated coloring of goods, and defrauding a brother for money. Truth must be an abiding principle in the soul that sanctifies, sets the heart in order, and makes a person true to principle, true to a brother, kindhearted, pitiful, and courteous, and only then can one teach truth simply and win souls. Without such truthfulness, profession of belief avails nothing, Jesus hides His face, and the Sun of Righteousness cannot shine into the heart.

A pledge secured by deception must still be honored when keeping it does not require wrongdoing, and neither desire for gain nor revenge nor self-interest excuses a truthful person for breaking it. Children please God with an honest heart by openly confessing wrongdoing rather than concealing it. The verse exposes the wrong of falsely claiming a mother's permission to leave while being unable to prove it on the plea that the permission letter was burned. By comparison with lying lips, a disordered dyspeptic stomach is also presented as an abomination to the Lord, showing that bodily health and the condition of the body matter to God.
