Proverbs 13:12

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

When the fulfillment of a deeply desired hope is long delayed, the waiting makes the heart sick with pain, sorrow, heartache, and discouragement. Years of financial burdens where inability to overcome them had nearly closed the prospect of repaying the money originally invested in a sanitarium are such a case of hope grown painful by delay. The unfinished Australian sanitarium, delayed despite strenuous effort, is an example of that sorrow, where the Lord sees and values self-sacrificing work for it, and the delay was caused by people failing to cooperate with one another and with God.

The grief is felt by people whose lives are marked by disappointment and weariness in a world of trials. Consolation and peace amid affliction are found in Jesus. The long wait of the German believers to see the truth proclaimed to their countrymen brought discouragement, yet they remained steadfast in faith and continued their efforts.
