Proverbs 14:5

A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

A faithful witness does not lie but speaks truth, while a false witness utters lies, showing the value of sincerity. As one of the maxims of Proverbs, the verse gives practical wisdom for the common experiences of everyday life and for moral and religious duty to family, neighbor, friends, and God, rewarding piety and punishing evil, and it is to be studied in the light of scriptural examples.

Christ, or Jesus, is the faithful Witness whose testimony is true, and a true witness delivers souls, so faithful witnessing for Christ requires truthfulness. His example shows that faithful witnessing is joined to the power of the Spirit and to obedience to God's commandments.

The verse requires faithful witnesses to tell the truth without equivocation or giving an uncertain message. When asked which day God appointed as the weekly Sabbath, faithful witnesses must testify plainly that it is the seventh day and must not replace that definite day with the vague idea of one unspecified day in seven, with claiming that the commandment requires only such an unspecified day amounting to false witness. In the Sabbath debate, faithful witnesses must not appeal to a text that says nothing about Sabbath keeping or does not address Sabbath keeping in order to claim or imply otherwise.
