Proverbs 14:6

A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth.

The saying sets two seekers side by side, for the scorner looks for wisdom and does not find it, while knowledge comes easily to the one who has understanding. The difference lies not in opportunity but in the heart, since sincerity makes truth readily received and its absence leaves the seeker empty. The scorner fails because the inner attitude is wrong — insincere, scornful, proud, and rejecting even in the act of seeking — while humility, receptivity, and a sincere heart open the way to truth. Sacred truth in particular requires reverence and a teachable spirit, not a flippant or worldly approach.

The wise are set apart from the scorner in this, that they are able to understand what is hidden. The understanding that makes knowledge easy is good understanding, and that good understanding belongs to all who do God's commandments through obedience. Lack of knowledge is therefore not unavoidable, for knowledge is readily accessible to the receptive and understanding person. There is no excuse for lacking it when it is so freely gained by those who have understanding.
