Proverbs 16:19

Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

It is better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly than to divide the spoil and share the gains with the proud. A humble spirit is worth more than success or spoil gained with the proud, and more than supremacy, flattery, and honor gained through pride. Pride and self-exaltation are to be rejected in favor of humility because they dishonor God by taking for self the honor and wisdom that belong to Him.

Striving to be first while lacking humility and refusing meekness brings loss of God's favor. Humility is essential to communion with God. A meek and lowly spirit fits a person for God's kingdom.
