Poor Family Shares a Meal of Herbs and BreadBible World

Proverbs 17:1

Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.

A simple meal enjoyed in quietness is better than abundance accompanied by conflict, so that even a scant portion eaten in peace outweighs a plentiful feast eaten with strife. Material plenty cannot outweigh a peaceful home, for a simple portion with peace is better than a house full with discord. The house full means a house filled with sacrificial food and offerings eaten amid discord. This is spoken from both wisdom and experience.

Love, not elegance or furniture or fine surroundings, makes a home, so a simple meal in a peaceful and loving home is better than abundance where hate and contention prevail. Kindness fosters peace and happiness while anger brings conflict and misery, so quietness at home is worth more than plenty with discord.

The dry morsel is bread and water received with quietness and a thankful heart, which is better and sweeter than rich food received with strife and without thankfulness. When the soul loves God even the least mercies from His hand are felt as priceless blessings, bringing a contentment and happy praise that great possessions and grand feasts cannot give. A simple crust or humble portion shared with love is better than wealth or abundance gained at the cost of dishonor and strife, and better than living in dishonor.
