Proverbs 17:15

He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.

To pronounce the guilty innocent and excuse wrongdoing is hateful to God and an abomination to Him. To condemn those who are righteous is equally hateful to Him and likewise an abomination. Assuring a dying sinner that he is at peace while his sins remain unconfessed is just such a justifying of the wicked, excusing one who should be led to repentance. Taking sides against those who are doing right is just such a condemning of the just, and it turns the sympathies of others against them so that they are drawn into the same wrong judgment.

Such misplaced sympathy gives wrong impressions of the case, blinds persons to their own true condition, and ends in their both deceiving others and being themselves deceived. Placing responsibility upon a man known to have disregarded reproof, and upholding him by public support, is another form of justifying the evildoer and is offensive to God.
