Proverbs 17:27

He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

True knowledge shows itself by sparing words, by a restrained speech that holds back what is unnecessary. Such restraint is the mark of the knowledgeable person, set apart from the fool who meddles. Understanding produces an excellent spirit, which is a cool, calm, and self-controlled spirit.

A person of understanding therefore governs the temper, not answering irritation quickly with angry words. Instead of reacting to every provocation, such a one passes over needless offenses. In a moment of anger, remaining silent rather than giving a harsh reply keeps the conflict from growing. This bridling of the tongue helps a person endure trials of patience.
